Scream’s Fluke S8-1 – Something Different and Marvellous!
Well, I’m still doing scenes from all over the Maritimes (mainly Nova Scotia), but this one is different. During my residency this summer, I went on a whale cruise – mainly in the waters around Brier’s Island. It was fantastic. Surrounded by four whales; I also saw dolphins and puffins. To get a photo of a whale’s fluke is rare, especially the ‘fingerprint’ side. Whales usually go back under the water like a glide not a dive, as did the four whales around the boat. Also, with a whole bunch of other people gathering around the side of the boat where the whales were, it’s hard to get a clear photo. Taking turns, 10 at a time, we were given the opportunity to go on the top deck of the boat and get photos. I got a lot, including videos, but none of the fluke.
The whale named Scream, was the most demonstrative of the pod. I was down on the lower deck at the back of the boat. Most others were on the starboard side watching the whales (I was making sure the boat didn’t lean too much to one side by staying on the opposite side 😊.) Suddenly, Scream broke free from the pod, came around right in front of me and dove straight down – showing off his fluke. It was only for a few seconds, but I just kept clicking and got the supreme photo. It was such a gift from God to see this, to capture it on a photo, and then now to capture it in art.
As usual, if you purchase this art, it does not come with the watermarked words “Scream’s Fluke”, it’s just the beautiful scene. Photo taken, and artwork completed in September 2026.
